New Zealand Location Map

New Zealand is known as 'the land of the long white cloud' and can also claim the title of the 'youngest country in the world'. The country is divided into two islands - the North Island where you can find the beautiful cities of Auckland and Wellington, and South Island - home to Christchurch and Queenstown.  New Zealand's spectacularly beautiful landscape includes vast mountain chains, steaming volcanoes, sweeping coastlines, deeply indented fiords and lush rainforests.

With over 400 golf courses to choose from, New Zealand stands up as one of the World's most desirable golfing destinations.  New Zealand is a place where you can play 18 holes against the backdrop of the spectacular Pacific Ocean in the morning, and then enjoy the jaw-dropping beauty of a golf course nestled in a geothermal wonderland in the afternoon.  There are a number of internationally acclaimed courses that will impress even the most discerning golfer for their impecable design such as Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs.

Auckland and Bay of Islands

Auckland city is located on the North Island over a narrow isthmus between the sparkling waters of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbour.  Within a 30-minute drive of magnificent beaches, bushwalking tracks, holiday islands, famous food and wine regions, it is little wonder that Auckland is New Zealands most popular city to live.  Aside from sailing, golf is a popular activity with a number of championship golf courses dotting this region.

Located 20 minutes from Auckland, Titirangi Golf Club is considered one of New Zealand's best courses with its tall exotic, native bush and undulating landscapes. Opened in 1926, the course was designed by famous course architect Alister MacKenzie. Today, the course is consistently rated in New Zealand's top five. The Auckland Golf Club is a private Golf Club that was founded in 1894. Auckland Golf Club is one of the top parkland courses in New Zealand and many National and International tournaments have been held on the course including New Zealand Opens, New Zealand Amateurs and the Bonallack Trophy which was held in 2006.

Spectacular finishing holes, ocean views, rolling terrain and classic, traditional values all combine to make the Gulf Harbour Country Club one of the most exciting developments in New Zealand. This 6,400 metre, par 72 golf course is located at Gulf Harbour on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, just north of Auckland. It meanders through native grasses and vegetation and has a natural look and feel from start to finish. The beauty, challenge and enjoyment of Gulf Harbour combine to provide an enjoyable golf experience. Muriwai Golf Club is a private club and links course situated in a protected bird sanctuary. There are no encroaching buildings, no traffic sounds or large crowds. The only sound you'll hear are the calls of native birds and the surf breaking on the beach. The course is of naturally rolling fairways and breathtaking views of sea and forests from every hole. To play at Muriwai is to play as the game was meant to be played.

Situated in Manukau City, within easy driving distance of Auckland International Airport and only 20 minutes drive from the centre of Auckland City, The Grange Golf Club is one of New Zealand's best courses. It offers excellent facilities and a championship standard course suitable for players of all abilities. The Grange golf course is always immacuately presented in all weathers and is an excellent test of golf. Visitors from around the world are made welcome, and the course has hosted every major New Zealand Tournament, both Amateur and Professional. The New Zealand Open Championship has been held on the course on ten occasions. The Formosa Auckland Country Club's golf course is surrounded by lush farmland and stunning views over the Hauraki Gulf, and is about 45 minutes from downtown Auckland. The course was designed by golfing legend Sir Bob Charles and is modeled on the Augusta National, home of the US Masters and was the venue for the 1998 New Zealand Open. Formosa is listed in The Finest Golf Clubs of the World and covers an area of 440 acres.

The Bay of Islands is approximately 3.5 hours drive north-west of Auckland.  Its 144 islands and secluded bays make this region one of the finest maritime parks in New Zealand. The Northern tip of New Zealand is renowned for blue skies, spectacular scenery and some very good golf courses. Also known as the Winterless North the area boasts a number of quality golf developments including the awe inspiring Kauri Cliffs and the equally as impressive Carrington Club.

Kauri Cliffs is one of those surreal golf experiences that avid golfers should experience at least once in their lifetime.  Located four and a half hours north of Auckland in the Bay of Islands region, its absolute ocean frontage ensures uninterrupted views on many of the golf holes as well as from the Lodge itself. Aside from the fifteen Pacific Ocean holes there are 3 beautiful inland holes which wind their way through marsh, forest, and farmland. The eighteen holes combine to form an interesting, enjoyable and sometimes challenging test of golf. Kauri Cliffs is a very playable golf course which can be enjoyed by all standards of golfers. Kauri Cliffs was also awarded Best New International Golf Course 2001 by Golf Digest and recently selected 58th Best Golf Course in the World by the accepted authority, US Golf Magazine.

The tournament quality 18 hole Carrington Golf Course was inaugurated on 15 December 2003 and designed by American golf course designer Matt Dye. The course is separated from the beautiful 15 metre high sand dunes of Karikari Beach and views to the North Cape of New Zealand by extensive 900 acre natural wetlands. Carrington is complete with rolling hills, vales, and natural water hazards that complement the natural contours of its location. The Carrington Golf Course is suitable for all players of varying skill levels, whilst also presenting a challenge to tournament golfers.

Wellington, Hawkes Bay and Taupo

Wellington is the North Island's capital city and is located in a sheltered harbour where wind is an everpresent feature of playing golf. A number of private golf clubs are close to the city and others located nearby in Lower and Upper Hutt. A one hour drive north of Wellington lies Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, formerly rated in the Top 100 courses in the World and New Zealands best example of a genuine links based course. Its greatest claim to fame in recent times was the hosting of the New Zealand Open where Tiger Woods was a very popular participant.

Approximately 6 hours drive north east of Wellington is Hawke's Bay, located on the Eastern side of the North Island with the twin city of Napier/Hastings being the central city.  A popular golf and wine region Hawke's Bay is also well known for its sunny days, beautiful beaches and award winning wines. Little towns such as Havelock North provide a great getaway from it all atmosphere. Clearly the jewel in the crown of this region is the world rated Cape Kidnappers Golf Course (currently ranked the 41st best golf course in the world by Golf Magazine). Located in and overlooking Hawke's Bay, Cape Kidnappers is a spectacular course perched on the edge of the cliffs.  Designed by World renowned golf course architect Tom Doak, the clever use of the layout is best seen from the air where Doak has used God created "fingers" of land to craft some memorable (and challenging) golf holes. A Par-71, 6510 meter course, Cape Kidnappers enjoys meticulous attention to detail in the golf course conditioning and five star service in the clubhouse thereby ensuring players a golfing experience of a lifetime.

Two hours drive north-west of Hawkes Bay and five hours drive north of Wellington is the busy holiday hub region of Taupo.  Taupo is nestled amongst magnificent mountain ranges and alongside a beautiful clean fresh water lake.  Taupo offers unlimted acitivites to choose from including jet boating, trout fishing or just dining in one of their many relaxing cafes and restaurants.  Taupo is also popular as a golfing destination with a number of private and public golf courses to choose from.

Taupo Golf Club is a private golf club located close to the Taupo township and situated in a mature park setting amongst thermal activity and under the eye of Mt Tauhara.  The club offers golfers a unique golfing experience with two 18 hole golf courses on offer year round.  Wairakei International Golf Course was built by the New Zealand government's Tourist Hotel Corporation and opened in 1970.  Available to green fee players, the 6429 meter course winds its away through the superb setting of the Taupo region and comprises 108 large well placed bunkers which has led to worldwide acclaim. In January 1996 US Golf Digest rated Wairakei 17th best golf course outside of the USA.  World renowned golfer and course designer, Jack Nicklaus designed The Kinloch Club which was officially opened in 2007.  This 18 hole signature course is the only Jack Nicklaus designed golf course in New Zealand.  The designers ensured that the natural beauty of the landscape was maintained and that the course would be both challenging and enjoyable for players of all levels.

Designed in consultation with New Zealand golfing legend, Sir Bob Charles, the course combines elements of links golf, inspired by the great Scottish courses with parkland golf, more reminiscent of Florida.

Founded in 1873, the Christchurch Golf Club is the second oldest golf club in New Zealand.  The club has hosted numerous New Zealand Open championships over its many years, as well as hosting the 1990 World Amateur Championship for the Eisenhower trophy.  Peter Thomson, legendary Australian golfer and course designer has recently undertaken some course refurbishments ensuring that Christchurch Golf Club continues its fine championship golfing tradtion.

Set amidst a spectacular alpine amphitheatre, strategic use of water sand traps ensure exciting and demanding golf. Measuring 6,412 metres (7,013 yards) from the back tees the design emphasises the natural features of the site, each hole having its own particular identity in terms of both strategy and landscape setting.

The Hills, opened in 2007, is a private golf course set over 101 hectares (250 acres) of former deer farm on the outskirts of Arrowtown in Central Otago. The Mill race winds its way through the property and feeds the ten lakes and various ponds and waterways on the golf course. Trees, both native and exotic, are a feature of the course.  The Hills is a Par-72, 6610 meter course that has been selected by New Zealand Golf to host the 2010 New Zealand Open in January 2010.

The Queenstown Golf Club is home to two distinct golf courses - Kelvin Heights and Frankston. Kelvin Heights Golf Course is set on the Peninsula surrounded by Lake Wakatipu. The course is situated in the amphitheatre of the Remarkable Mountains and offers a unique opportunity to play on what is internationally regarded as one of the more picturesque golf courses in the world.
