The design of the European Club has attempted to modernize the traditional values of links golf and this has been achieved with magnificent results. Blind shots, deemed by many as an archaic feature of links golf, have largely been banished from the agenda at the European Club, with 14 holes offering a complete tee to green vista and the remaining holes providing a clearly visible landing area. Fast running fairways, greens that invite the pitch and run approach and acres of tall, waving grasses and golden flowered gorse are of course, the very essence of links golf and all remain in abundance at the European Club.

At first glance, the European Club presents an awesome challenge, with yawning bunkers and fairways seeming like mere ribbons through the sand hills. Truth is that the links has been designed primarily as a place for real golfers for those who both think and play well. Weaker players are advised to play within the scope of their talents and refrain from undue acts of aggression against a golf course, which takes few prisoners. In short, the handicap golfer must learn to use their handicap stroke to achieve a net par and try not to look at the hole as a potential net birdie. Discipline is rarely more rewarded than at the European Club.

The layout here offers an irregular pattern of pars, with three par 3's and like Royal Birkdale, Turnberry and the Old Course at St. Andrews, only two par 5's. The heart of your round at the European Club is the stretch from holes 7 through 13, which features six substantial par 4's and one bone crunching par 5 of almost 600 yards. Make no mistake that this is a links designed to be great. Growth and time will see the course develop from a great links to one of the world's finest. But as the saying goes "The man who made time, made plenty of it". We'll just wait and see.

Ballybunion Golf Club - Old Course

The Old Course at Ballybunion is one of the most popular courses in the whole of Ireland. Established in 1893, the course was extended to 18 holes in 1926. The Old Course exudes a majestic feel that simply cannot be compared to any other course on earth. It is consistently rated among the top courses in the world.

The Old Course at Ballybunion is one of the most popular courses in the whole of Ireland. American visitors in particular just love the course and five-times Open champion Tom Watson is a self-confessed fan of Ballybunion.

Established in 1893, the course was extended to 18 holes in 1926. Due to the threat of coastal erosion - it is set in sandhills alongside the Atlantic Ocean - the order of the holes was changed in the early 1970s and you now actually start at the old 14th.

Visitors to Ballybunion will undergo a stiff test from start to finish and the homeward nine on the Old Course are simply spectacular. The 11th is possibly the most famous and rated by Tom Watson as one of the toughest holes in the world. The 12th is possibly tougher for the amateur, a long par-3 to an elevated green across an entire expanse of wild duneland.

The par-5 16th possibly typifies Ballybunion, it is intimidating with a tee-shot played to a dog-leg. The temptation to take an agressive line often does not pay dividends and the more consevative line, while difficult to understand from the tee, does not make the hole impossibly long. The 2nd shot must be played uphill through a funnel of dunes leaving a short pitch to one of the larger greens on the course.

The 18th hole is one of the most discussed holes after a round on the Old Course. The approach is again uphill to another dune well protected by sand dunes and almost blind from the fairway. A par on this hole is a noteworthy achievement!

Doonbeg (Trump International Ireland)

Doonbeg Golf Club remains the only Greg Norman designed course in the British Isles and he has achieved near perfection in his first conquest of links terrain. The relatively new course has already had the honour of hosting the 2002 Palmer Cup.

The site at Doonbeg was originally proposed as a golf links in the late 19th century by Scottish Guardsmen stationed in Ireland. Though superior to the other site mooted, Doonbeg was considered too far from the railway station - and so they built their golf course at Lahinch and founded Lahinch Golf Club instead.

The owners of Kiawah Island golf resort purchased the site over 100 years later and the Doonbeg story began.

Greg Norman was commissioned to design the golf course, and like the great man himself the course is bold, brash and with a great deal of style. It is also controversial - visitors tend to either love of loathe Doonbeg to one extreme or the other with very little in between.

The course lies beside White Strand on the west Clare coast, 20 miles south of Lahinch. The beach is one of Ireland's remotest and beautiful stretches of sand, defining Doughmore Bay with the Atlantic Ocean stretching beyond in every direction. Sand dunes mark the edge of land, high above the beach and the golf course plays out and back towards Carrowmore Point to the north.

The most memorable hole is the par-3 14th, a short iron across a deep valley of dense dune grass to a green perched on the very edge of the coast line. The huge three-tiered greenlooks very small from the tee and must be found.

Founded in 1893 by a Scottish Regiment of British Army officers stationed in Limerick, Lahinch Golf Club with its towering sand dunes, undulating fairways and rolling greens is the perfect example of a true Irish links.

Set in the sand dunes of west Co. Clare and bounded by the vast expanse of the mighty Atlantic ocean, it is indeed a humbling experience to play this historic links.

Originally designed by 'Old' Tom Morris of St. Andrews and extensively revised by Dr. Alastair MacKenzie in 1928 it inspired both these great men. Morris has been quoted as saying, "I consider the links as fine a natural course as it has ever been my good fortune to play over", while MacKenzie, a man responsible for the design of such American greats as Pebble Beach, Cypress Point and Augusta National, said of Lahinch, "Lahinch will make the finest and most popular course that I, or I believe anyone else, ever constructed".

Sweeping statements indeed, but Lahinch does not disappoint. A second course, The Castle was added in 1975, but it is the old course that includes the real gems.

Playing Tips

1
Par 4, Length 381m

A par 4 to a plateau green. Drive to the right hand side of fairway. Your approach to the green must be on the left to avoid the bunkers on the right of the green.

2
Par 5, Length 534m

A par 5. Play the drive to the right hand side of the fairway to avoid the bunkers on the left. The second shot must be played well to the left to avoid the rough on the right.

3
Par 4, Length 446m

A blind tee shot uphill. Play your second shot for the front right portion of the green as missing either front left or over the back will leave an extremely difficult up and down.

4
Par 5, Length 475m

The Klondyke. Drive to a long narrow fairway. The second shot is blind , over the hill called the Klondyke. Ladies are inclined to go around he hill on the right. Over the green is out of bounds.

5
Par 3, Length 154m

A very unusual par 3. The white stone on the hill marks the position of the pin. Play enough club to get over the hill.

6
Par 4, Length 424m

Aim for the right half of this fairway. There is a large bunker in the middle of this fairway. If the wind is with you, you will not need a driver. The 2nd shot is aimed at the left half of the green to avoid the bunkers on the right.

7
Par 4, Length 411m

Drive to the centre of the fairway. The second shot is very difficult. Ther are bunkers left and right at the front of the green. Any shot to the left hand side of the green will fall off this plateau green.

8
Par 3, Length 166m

A very precise shot is necessary to this par 3 . The bunkers left and right have to avoided at all costs. There is deep rough over the green.

9
Par 4, Length 400m

Place your tee shot to the left half of this hole. This will open up any pin position on this green, allowing you to use the mound as a back stop for your second shot.

10
Par 4, Length 441m

A drawn tee is best to take the shape of this hole. Take a half a club extra for your second shot to ensure being ?up?.

11
Par 3, Length 170m

There is no bail out on this hole. The bunker from hell is to right of the green, invisible from the tee.

12
Par 5, Length 577m

A Par 5. Aim your tee shot at the Castle or slightly right of the Castle. It is best to play our second shot short of the green. This hole is well bunkered and any shot hit firmly to this green will feed into the back right hand bunker.

13
Par 4, Length 279m

A short par 4 The best shot is to drive to the left of the green to avoid the ?mine?on the right. This hole is drivable with a following wind but is high risk.

14
Par 4, Length 461m

This hole has a very narrow entrance to the green, with high mounds left and right

15
Par 4, Length 466m

Play your tee shot to the right of the bunker on the left. This will open up the safer left hand side of the green.

16
Par 3, Length 195m

The safer tee shot is to the front left portion of the green. Do not mess with the right side as any miss hit will gather into the bunker

17
Par 4, Length 436m

Favour the left side of the this fairway with your tee shot. This will leave a second shot into a green where the safest area is the middle to back right.

18
Par 5, Length 534m

A par 5 for men and a par 4 for Ladies. A straight hole for men but best to favour the right side of the fairway. From the ladies tee, aim for the church bell tower. Anything played left of centre can fall into the bunker that is visible from the tee.

Unrivalled in terms of the magnificent beauty and setting of the site, Old Head Golf Links continues to take the golfing world by storm. The brainchild of John and Patrick O’Connor, the Club has developed into one of the most recognised and sought after golf experiences anywhere on earth.

The Old Head Golf Links is one of the most remarkable developments ever conceived in the history of golf: an Atlantic promontory that will never be rivalled in terms of drama and beauty. It rises hundreds of feet high above dramatic cliffs, surrounded by the ocean on all sides and commanding the most spectacular views from every part.

The Old Head is ideally located on the South coast of Ireland, a 30-minute drive from Cork International Airport, and within striking distance of the renowned courses of South-West Ireland.

The course was designed by a combination of Ireland's golfing heroes and recognised international contemporary design experts led by Joe Carr, Ron Kirby, Paddy Merrigan and the late Eddie Hackett. It opened in June 1997 to international acclaim.

Golf at Old Head is truly unforgettable. How highly the golf experience is rated is most likely inversely proportional to the number of golf balls lost and the strength of the wind!

When he first saw the area upon which his company was to build Tralee golf links, he was ecstatic about the possibilities. "I have never come across a piece of land so ideally suited for the building of a golf course" he said.

"I designed the first nine but surely God designed the back nine", Palmer explained. "I am happy that we have one of the worlds' great golf links here."

"The setting is quite the most magnificent backdrop for a golf course that I have ever encountered", wrote Peter Dobereiner, the famous golf writer, not long after the course was opened.

While it always boasted a magnificent setting, with the course settling down and the greens thriving over time, Tralee has now joined the elite group of Irish links.

With views of the Atlantic and white sandy beaches from almost every hole, Tralee earns rave reviews from all who play it. There are some great holes on the course, notably the second, which runs along the clifftops, and the third, which has been likened to the famous seventh hole at Pebble Beach.

Golf at Waterville is a mystical experience – the beauty of classic links land, surrounded by the sea, yet forever challenged and shaped by the elements. Waterville Golf Links is currently rated among the top 5 courses in Ireland and the top 20 links courses in the world.

Links golf combines sand dunes gorse and native grasses, firm fairways, sod faced bunkers and subtle putting surfaces all intertwined by the ever changing weather. Forget the lob wedge. Think bump and run and creative shot making.

It is hard to believe that Waterville Golf Club was only built in 1973. It's the type of place you feel that has been there forever. Jack Mulcahy, an Irish-born American, had the vision for this links gem and, after returning to Ireland to live, he handed the task of designing the course to the legendary Eddie Hackett.

His creation is widely regarded as one of the top links courses in the world and the Americans in particular flock to Waterville in their thousands every year.

While the front nine is good, the inward half is even better and make sure you take a minute or two to enjoy the view of Mulcahy's Peak at the par-3 17th. Yes, it is easy to see why this place is so popular.
