Mission Hills - Els Course

As the 5th signature course of Mission Hills, the theme of the Els Course is to create a lush look of dense trees, wide swaths of manicured turf to evoke a unique flavour of his South Africa homeland. Measuring over 7,000 yards, it follows a unique core layout, as opposed to corridors.

Ernie Els burst onto the international golf scene when he won the U.S. Open in 1994 at the age of 24.  The South African native followed that with the US Open in 1997 and the 2002 British Open.

Playing Tips

1
Par 4, Length 480m

This long opening hole has been redesigned with a bunker complex both right of the landing area and left of the green. An imposing grove of trees down the left side makes for a demanding tee shot. Play near the right bunkers to give your second shot the best angle into a green sloping from right-to-left. A solid opening hole.

2
Par 4, Length 405m

Medium in length but slightly uphill, this demanding hole begins with a tight, tree-lined tee shot leaving an uphill second to a multi-tiered green. Although bunkerless at the front, anything short of this green will leave a difficult hanging lie or a severely uphill pitch from a tightly-mown fairway. Behind the green is an old bomb shelter unearthed during construction, giving a unique backdrop and foreshadowing the next six holes where slope and elevation will dictate whether a golfer attacks or plays safe

3
Par 3, Length 178m

A medium-length par 3 playing slightly uphill to a multi-tiered green with a false front and deep bunker left. This hole demands at least one more club; anything short or left leaves a very difficult recovery. Make every effort to get your tee ball on the proper shelf.

4
Par 5, Length 582m

This hole begins high atop a mountain peak providing commanding views of the entire course and much of the Mission Hills property. Rock walls support a series of tees that stand some 40 meters above the first landing area. The landing area is initially wide but quickly becomes a narrow neck with a stream left and native vegetation right leaving little room for error for those adventurous enough to pull out driver. The stream runs down the entire left side of the hole to the green.

5
Par 3, Length 181m

This medium-length par 3 plays slightly uphill. From the tee, this hole looks somewhat benign and receptive but balls on the short-right side of the green are subject to a strong slope that pulls them away from the putting surface. Play long and left to be safe.

6
Par 5, Length 517m

This hole is short on the scorecard but long in reality as This hole is short on the scorecard but long in reality as it plays uphill some 30 meters. A left-to-right tee shot sets up decision time: challenge a very deep cross bunker 70 yards short of the green, or lay-up short. Carrying the bunker will yield a flat lie for the third, while playing short will leave an uphill shot and limited view of the flagstick. The green is wildly contoured with edges that dramatically fall-off and repel shots that aren't solidly struck. A very demanding three-shot hole.

7
Par 4, Length 468m

Long but downhill, the seventh calls for the player to fit an accurate drive into a well-bunkered landing area. Big tee shots will leave a slightly awkward downhill stance. Note that balls hit short and right of the green will feed on, so beware of playing too much club -- the slope behind the green is severe.

8
Par 4, Length 369m

Plays uphill to somewhat of a tight, tree-lined landing area. Anything right may end up falling down a steep slope. The green is well-bunkered right and steeply contoured. There's a bail-out area left of the green, but be prepared for a difficult recovery.

9
Par 4, Length 440m

A long, slightly downhill par 4. Carry the bunker off the tee and a considerably shorter approach shot will result. The well-bunkered green is fairly flat leaving great birdie opportunities for crisply struck approaches.

10
Par 4, Length 331m

Short but treacherous, this hole has a stream from tee to green and features deep fairway bunkering. A carry bunker at about 180 yards is the perfect target-line for an iron tee shot as the ball will feed quickly toward the stream leaving a level lie to attack the pin. Drivers off the tee must negotiate a series of bunkers but will reward a threaded tee shot. The green is long and narrow and best attacked from the fairway's left edge. Expect to see a wide range of scores on this visually-stimulating hole.

11
Par 4, Length 538m

This medium-length par 4 demands a second shot carry over a stream. Play near the right bunker for the best angle into the wild, three-tiered green resting above the stream's edge. The upper left shelf will challenge the best of players with its sharp fall-off slopes. A bunkerless greensite but difficult nonetheless.

12
Par 4, Length 410m

Playing slightly left-to-right, the tee shot is should be played to the right near the stream's edge. A long bunker left of the green and grass mounds right protect a level putting surface. A good birdie opportunity.

13
Par 5, Length 524m

This tree-lined hole double-doglegs slightly uphill to a plateaued green. A right-to-left drive sets up a second shot that must navigate a series of cross bunkers. Play long and left for the best angle into the green and don't get caught short and right of the green where a deep grass hollow leaves a difficult up and down. A magnificent backdrop of mature tress creates a scenic, parkland atmosphere.

14
Par 4, Length 360m

A short par 4 with multiple options off the tee. With water left and short of the green and a deep pot bunker in the middle of the fairway, the golfer has several choices. Play short of the bunker leaving a longish second shot over water; play left of the bunker, flirting with the water's edge for a much shorter shot; or carry the bunker with driver to leave an easier angle and pitch to the green. The putting surface is perilously close to the water and protected long by a deep pot bunker. Pin placement may factor heavily in tee shot selection.

15
Par 4, Length 410m

A very scenic hole playing along a lake with waterfalls at both the tee and behind the green. The backdrop is a stunning, uphill view toward the hotel with large swaths of flowering groundcover and dense trees. Left pin placements bring water into play. A spectacular and dangerous par 3.

16
Par 4, Length 410m

Not very long on the card but sharply uphill, this hole demands a strong drive to leave a second shot with a view of the green. Bunkers short of the green eliminate any possibility of running the ball on. A high, lofted shot to the shallow green is best.

17
Par 3, Length 222m

Long and treacherous, this par 3 features water down the right from tee to green and a bunker protecting the left side of the green. The green is fairly level so finding the surface is most of the battle. This hole will cause difficulties, especially for those players feeling the heat of the closing holes.

18
Par 4, Length 438m

A spectacular series of waterfalls protect the inside turn of this right-to-left hole, tempting the player to bite off as much of the edge as he can. Bailing out right off the tee will leave a substantially longer shot into the well-protected green set close to encroaching jungle. A demanding, beautiful finishing hole that will yield birdies only to two well-played shots!

Mission Hills - Ozaki Course

The Ozaki Course takes advantage of dramatic terrain by playing largely through single corridor valleys offering elevated tees and fairways surrounded by native slopes. Large areas of turf and wide fairways, punctuated by strategic bunkering, contrast with tall slopes of native plants and trees. The course ends with the tee shot on 18th lined up at the impressive hotel/clubhouse framed between two mountain peaks.

The main feature of the Ozaki Course is the unique and unconventional direction of flow of the fairways on a terrain of mountain valleys. Jumbo Ozaki took full advantage of the veins of the mountain range by housing the holes in the many valleys found here giving each hole a natural protection in the form of wooded hillslopes of native flora.

Nowhere on the course illustrates the contour better than at the end of Hole#12 where a 280-yard long tunnel connects to the tee box of Hole#13. Pitching and chipping skills on sloping ground are crucial to a good play on this course.

The Par-4 395-yard Signature Hole, aptly numbered 13, has a deep valley lined with bunkers awaiting the tee-shot. For those lucky enough there's some space to the right but with poor angle for the second landing. Big hitters could always try to carry over and save the day.

Playing Tips

1
Par 4, Length 458m

The opening hole is a par 4 that doglegs slightly to the right. The landing area is pinched, and the green protected by sand front and back. Four will feel like a birdie to start your round.

2
Par 4, Length 343m

This short par 4 offers a good chance at birdie. From an elevated tee, the hole features a lake down the left from landing area to green. Aggressive play will yield both low and high scores.

3
Par 5, Length 511m

Another good birdie opportunity awaits on this short, downhill par 5 that's reachable in two shots. A tricky green could pose problems for the flatstick

4
Par 4, Length 445m

Keep the tee shot left for the best angle of approach to the green tucked above a lake on the right. Long and tough.

5
Par 4, Length 430m

A medium-length dogleg right that crosses a drainage channel. The downhill tee shot sets up a difficult uphill approach.

6
Par 3, Length 147m

With a green perched above a lake, this par 3 plays even shorter than its scorecard yardage from super-elevated tees set atop a rockwalled cliff.

7
Par 4, Length 328m

A short, slightly uphill, left-to-right hole that plays into a canyon of thickly-forested hillsides. Position off the tee is very important to produce the best angle of attack.

8
Par 3, Length 220m

A long, downhill par 3 into a bowl-like green complex set far below. Large, dramatic bunkering surrounds the green.

9
Par 5, Length 575m

From the elevated tees, this hole plays into a valley below a towering mountain peak and ends at a lakeside, double-green shared with No. 18. A backdrop of vertical, exposed rock stands guard over the multi-tiered green.

10
Par 4, Length 327m

A short, tricky, hole featuring a rollercoaster landing area falling severely to the right. Stay left for the best angle of attack on the uphill approach.

11
Par 4, Length 420m

Both the tee shot and approach must carry a lake / stream that meanders through native jungle. The left side of the fairway falls sharply toward the water. Moderate in length but very demanding.

12
Par 3, Length 221m

The course's longest par 3 plays downhill to a natural canyon backdrop. A left-to-right shot will most easily negotiate the greenside bunkers.

13
Par 4, Length 395m

Requires a downhill drive into a canyon lined with bunkers. A tee shot down the right will set up the best angle into the peanut-shaped putting surface.

14
Par 5, Length 610m

A severe drop in elevation from first to second landing area will make the hole play a bit shorter. Stay left for the best view of the green on the third shot.

15
Par 4, Length 366m

An uphill, split fairway par 4 with a stream running down the middle. The green is bisected by a significant ridge.

16
Par 4, Length 451m

Probably the course's most difficult hole, it swings right-to-left out of a narrow, stream-lined chute to a green guarded by water short and right. Any par will be very well earned.

17
Par 3, Length 185m

This par 3 plays over water to a large, heavily-contoured, multi-tiered green sitting atop a rock wall. Mis-hit tee shots will be tough to recover from.

18
Par 5, Length 579m

Hole #18 - 579 Yards Par 5 The tee shot is aimed at the clubhouse, framed between two towering peaks. A big drop in elevation from the landing area sets the chance to take a crack at the double-green for an eagle putt. But beware the water in front.

Mission Hills - Pete Dye Course

Course Information

Par:
ACR:
Length (m):
Architect: Pete Dye
Design Year: 2007

Playing Tips

1
Par 4, Length 426m

The opening par 4 plays fairly straight off the tee. The green is guarded by deep, grass-faced bunkers left and right.

2
Par 3, Length 136m

The shortest hole on the course plays uphill to a green ringed by sand. Dye's trademark railroad ties will menace tee shots that fly too far.

3
Par 4, Length 343m

Play conservatively off the tee. The front of the contoured putting surface is guarded by an extremely deep bunker.

4
Par 5, Length 538m

With an elevation drop of more than 20 metres from the tee to the fairway, this par 5 is reachable in two. The second shot must be well-struck, however, as a stone wall and water protect the angled green. Lay up left for the best angle on your third.

5
Par 4, Length 418m

This turtle-backed green will repel shots that hit its edges.

6
Par 5, Length 565m

With a view of mountains in the distance, the green is fronted by two extremely deep bunkers.

7
Par 4, Length 393m

Playing uphill, the short-iron second must be spinning and crisp, as the slender green provides little margin for error.

8
Par 4, Length 315m

Beware the many bunkers that dot this fairway. This short par 4 will test even the most savvy of players.

9
Par 3, Length 189m

A visually dramatic par-three with a long tee-to-green bunker and a green protected front-left by an exceptionally daunting bunker hiding half the putting surface. Saving par from the chipping areas around the green will require deft touch.

10
Par 3, Length 191m

Take careful aim at the small, sloping target and don't be distracted by the awesome views. Avoid the bunker left at all costs.

11
Par 4, Length 337m

Your best iron approach will be needed to hold the right-to-left canted green. Crater-like bunkers front the shallow green surrounded by three chipping areas.

12
Par 4, Length 411m

Avoid the bunkers left off the tee of this right-to-left dogleg. The partially-hidden green is nestled among a series of mounds and bunkers.

13
Par 5, Length 530m

Arguably the most challenging hole on the course, it features a "Himalayas" bunker inspired by England?s Royal St. George?s Golf Club. Take a shot at it in two, but heed the out-of-bounds left.

14
Par 4, Length 337m

The green complex at this short par 4 is reminiscent of a cratered moon scape. Despite its length, par is a good score.

15
Par 4, Length 319m

Players can take dead aim with the driver. The tennis-racquet-shaped green is nicknamed "flyswatter" and is likely the most wildly contoured of any at Mission Hills.

16
Par 3, Length 200m

A strong par 3. A miss short and left will be the least damaging to your scorecard, although the undulating chipping area is no bargain.

17
Par 4, Length 490m

A supreme test of a golfer?s ability. Only the lowest handicappers will reach this uphill green in two. A par four-and-a-half, if there ever was one.

18
Par 5, Length 605m

A rarity: a true three-shot par 5. Position your first two shots to attack the hole?s sloping, three-tiered green. A cavernous bunker reminiscent of Dye?s 16th at PGA West?s Stadium Course guards the putting surface?s left side. Not to be outdone, its right is menaced by three railroad tie-ringed hazards while a front pot bunker awaits pitches that are short.

Mission Hills - Vijay Course

Vijay Singh introduces a 150-yard beach bunker - a visually striking feature in which great stretches of sand run along, and right down, into the water. Moreover, he skillfully incorporates the Pebble Beach 18th hole design into the course, which makes the course the most spectacular in Asia.

Vijay Singh incorporates much of what makes Pebble Beach special and the result is a spectacular golf course that ranks well at the top in many aspects in Asia at least. The main feature is the strikingly visual sand bunker stretching a long 45 meters with the sand running right down and meeting the water.

The Signature Hole is the Par-4 432-yard Hole#2 where the water edge follows on the left and leans to the right side near to the end of a normal tee-shot leaving either water or fairway on the far right for a dry landing. The choice is obvious. Play safe and land the tee-shot there will earn a poor angle and longer distance for the second landing shot. Brave the water edge will ensure a good angled-shot to the green even if the pot bunker just in front of the green is ever so threatening.

Moreover, he skillfully incorporates the Pebble Beach 18th hole design into the course, which makes the course the most spectacular in Asia.

Playing Tips

1
Par 5, Length 534m

This medium-length par 5 plays slightly downhill to a well-bunkered green that's pitched from front to back. Reachable in two for longer players, the second shot must negotiate a pot bunker short and left of the green. A birdie opportunity to start the round.

2
Par 4, Length 432m

Plays along water left of the landing area and right at the green. Drives pushed right will leave a long, second shot over water. The more the tee shot flirts with water left, the better the angle in.

3
Par 5, Length 605m

Demands three well-executed shots. With water all along the right side and a 150-yard long beach bunker leading to the slightly raised green, this hole is one of the most difficult on the course. Par is nothing to be ashamed of.

4
Par 4, Length 373m

A thinking man's short par 4. A sand and water run down the right side of the hole from tee to green. Play too safe to the left and a large, bunker-strewn mound completely obscures the view of the green. Instead, aim right to leave an open view. Long hitters may opt for the bold play of flying the mound entirely, potentially driving the green. The hole also offers a spectacular backdrop of the Mission Hills Hotel.

5
Par 4, Length 487m

A long waste bunker down the right catches the player's eye on the tee. Approach the green with a left-to-right shot but make sure to carry the bunker short and left of the green. If worried about the deep bunker to the right of the green, bailing out to the left is not a bad option.

6
Par 3, Length 122m

The shortest hole on the course features a wild, well-bunkered green set at the water's edge. Placement on the proper tier of the green is necessary to limit three-putts.

7
Par 4, Length 393m

Protected along the entire right side by water, the seventh features a menacing collection of bunkers long and left off the tee. Play safe with your drive and you should still have a middle to short iron into the green.

8
Par 3, Length 197m

A well-struck middle or long iron is needed to hold this deep, somewhat narrow green flanked by water and bunkers. Be very happy with a three here.

9
Par 4, Length 422m

This long, left-to-right par 4 is bunkered at the turn and features a fairway sloping right-to-left. A long bunker runs from landing area to green, setting up a difficult carry for the second shot. The feint-of-heart can miss the green to the right and still have a good chance at par.

10
Par 5, Length 553m

A long roundhouse, right-to-left hole that wraps around water on the left from tee to green. Playing away from the water will make the hole even longer. The green is atop a rock wall and fronted by bunkers. A two-shot hole for only the longest and bravest of players!

11
Par 5, Length 520m

A more reasonable opportunity for an eagle putt. Turning left-to-right out of a chute of mounds and trees, the second shot must carry a long waste bunker to reach the green. A small pot bunker left of the green will influence shots, especially those trying to reach back left pin placements.

12
Par 3, Length 198m

This hole's features a long, sandy waste area and is framed by forested hills. The putting surface is set at a left-to-right angle and favors a slight fade.

13
Par 5, Length 545m

A double-dogleg par 5 with water right of the first landing area before it wraps left to a green nestled against a horseshoe-shaped bunker. Second shots should favor the right side of the fairway to leave the best approach.

14
Par 3, Length 164m

Fire away from a slightly elevated tee to a peninsula green protected right, left and short by water. The rock-walled green complex has a severely undulating green and a wonderful backdrop of dense trees and panoramas of the golf courses.

15
Par 4, Length 355m

A slightly blind drive plays over a pot bunker-protected mound to a landing area with bunkers left and a long waste area right that wraps around the green. Tee shots played out to the right will leave the best angle to attack the small green, while those played left will leave a slightly blind second hiding a severe depression short of the green.

16
Par 3, Length 209m

This par 3 has a little of everything: length, elevation change, water, grass mounds and a pot bunker. Miss the green and you'll have your work cut out to make par, but at least the scenery is spectacular.

17
Par 4, Length 467m

A long, uphill par 4 marked by a green protected left by a series of deep bunkers. There's room off the tee, but its length makes it a very demanding hole.

18
Par 4, Length 429m

Finishing at the back of the hotel / clubhouse complex, this uphill, medium-length par 4 demands a long tee shot in order to set up a short iron second to the well-protected green. A deep bunker in front necessitates an exacting second shot, especially to any pins on the right side. A very strong finish to a challenging test of golf.

Playing Tips

1
Par 4, Length 401m

An ideal tee shot calls for a long iron or fairway wood as bunkers right and left are in range. The second shot again requires accuracy to avoid sand to the left and back right. Good club selection is key to starting a round with a makeable birdie attempt.

2
Par 5, Length 602m

The length of this hole makes it particularly challenging. Only the longest hitters will be able to reach the hole in two, meaning most will lay-up in the 100-yard range. It?s an increasingly rare breed: a legitimate three-shot par5.

3
Par 4, Length 372m

This hole is marked by deep bunkers that pinch the landing area. A long iron off the tee may be the prudent play.

4
Par 4, Length 424m

One of the most beautiful, natural holes on the course, it?s been recently redesigned to improve strategic options and pace of play. A classic example of a hole that can be made easier for members and tougher for tournament play.

5
Par 3, Length 227m

Swirling wind often plays a role in determining club selection at this par 3. There is plenty of room in front of the green, while the bunker short and left should be avoided. A ridge runs across the green, so it is important for the tee shot to find the same level as the pin.

6
Par 5, Length 524m

Right-center of the fairway is the line to take from the tee. Big hitters may be able to reach in two. With a ridge slicing through this shallow and deceptive green, those who opt to lay-up with their second shot should be in prime position to attack the flag with their third.

7
Par 4, Length 417m

A series of bunkers at the inside of the turn create a true left-to-right dogleg. Aim at the left bunker with a fairway wood to open up the green for your second.

8
Par 3, Length 145m

The green is well-protected by bunkers on the course?s shortest hole. Despite the undulation nature of the putting surface, players will be seeking birdies here.

9
Par 4, Length 452m

It is essential to stay away from the right side with the tee shot. Bunkers and a deep hollow will catch any approach shots that are short or pulled. The hole has a tricky putting surface to complete the front nine.

10
Par 4, Length 417m

A beautiful lake creates a calm feel, while a few bunkers on the outside of the turn will keep players on their toes and require additional accuracy.

11
Par 5, Length 560m

The hole has been remodeled and tightened to provide a tougher test for players. The landing area allows for a good visual of the lake and surrounding rocks about 100 yards short of the green. Carry it and the player will be rewarded with a third shot up the throat of the green.

12
Par 4, Length 426m

This dogleg right plays slightly downhill to a beautiful green guarded on the right by one of the largest greenside bunkers on the course. Position your tee shot along the fairway?s left side for the best angle in.

13
Par 3, Length 185m

This medium length par 3 plays over a lake to a well-bunkered green, set at a right-to-left, 45 degree angle. A tee shot that finds the putting surface should yield a good look at birdie.

14
Par 4, Length 454m

Doglegging slightly right to left and uphill, this hole plays longer than the yardage would indicate. An additional tournament tee has been added to provide extra challenge. Deep bunkers guard the green where tricky pin placements are plentiful.

15
Par 3, Length 203m

This is a long par 3 playing over a huge bunker stretching from tee to green. The putting surface is large and heavily-sloped. There is a sizable bail-out area on the left, but it will leave you with a difficult chip.

16
Par 5, Length 539m

Water looms down the right side of nearly the entire hole, awaiting errant second or third shots, and the landing area for the drive is pinched by sand on the left. A very exciting hole, as players can just as easily make eagle as double bogey.

17
Par 4, Length 487m

A slight right-to-left dogleg, this is perhaps the toughest hole on the course despite its lack of fairway bunkers. Sand left and right of the green, combined with a hump running through the middle of it, makes par an exceptionally good score.

18
Par 4, Length 459m

This is a fabulous finishing hole that tests the mettle of all players whose matches go to the wire. Long drives to the right-center of the fairway will gain extra yardage from the downslope. With the clubhouse as the backdrop, the approach to the two-tiered green is a daunting one over bunkers, particularly when the flag is on the left.

Playing Tips

1
Par 3, Length 110m

The opening hole is reminiscent of one of the classic par 3s at Chicago Golf Club. It features angular bunkering and green edges.

2
Par 3, Length 87m

Inspired by Pinehurst No. 2, this hole is characterized by its domed green that falls off in every direction. With the greensite perched nearly two metres above the fairway, a creative short game is a major advantage.

3
Par 3, Length 92m

An original creation, this horseshoe-shaped green is inspired by classic and modern designs. It features a depressed green surface at the front of a wide, yet shallow, putting surface.

4
Par 3, Length 113m

Similar to innovative designs by such notable ?Golden Age? golf course architects as C.B. MacDonald and Seth Raynor, the elevated green is surrounded by a moat of sand. Its trademark is the continuous, steep grass-faced bunker.

5
Par 3, Length 138m

The putting surface on the fifth hole is divided by a swale that is more than 1.5 metres in depth. It's a "Biarritz" green.

6
Par 3, Length 131m

A popular style at many golf courses in the British Isles, the green at the sixth is nestled into surrounding knolls.

7
Par 3, Length 128m

With a series of cascading waterfalls as the backdrop, this green surface features three tiers, each separated by nearly one metre. Players must also contend with an ominous water hazard.

8
Par 3, Length 121m

nspired by the fabled ?Postage Stamp" hole at Royal Troon in Scotland, this is an amazingly small green surrounded by deep bunkers with sod walls.

9
Par 3, Length 195m

Perhaps the most replicated par 3 design in the world, this famous Redan-style hole is highlighted by a deep, grass-faced bunker front left and angled green surface canted right-to-left and front-to-back.

10
Par 3, Length 162m

The green at the 10th juts out into the water that surrounds it on three sides.

11
Par 3, Length 93m

Another original design, this hole is perhaps the most exciting on the course. Contours form a spine that divides the green into five distinct lobes which leave 'roller-coaster' putts for any balls that come to rest in the wrong portion.

12
Par 3, Length 192m

Inspired by greensites such as the third hole at California's Spyglass Hill, this green sits amid a group of hills and tilts away from the golfer.

13
Par 3, Length 155m

Based on the famous 17th green at Pebble Beach, this ?hour-glass? green has an extremely narrow center.

14
Par 3, Length 161m

Modeled after holes like the 14th at TPC Sawgrass, the raised green is protected by a long, steep, grass-faced and flat-bottomed sand bunker separating the green from the water.

15
Par 3, Length 128m

Similar to the famous par 3 at Ireland's Lahinch, the large mound in front of the green obscures everything except the extreme right side of the green from the tee.

16
Par 3, Length 117m

Perhaps the most talked about par-3 style in the world, the island green strikes fear in all golfers as anything less than a perfectly played shot ends up in the water.

17
Par 3, Length 118m

Based on the sixth hole at California's Riviera Country Club, a bunker is placed right in the center of the green.

18
Par 3, Length 152m

A series of hazards create several playing options on the closing hole that is inspired by the devilish second shot facing golfers at the par-4 17th ?Road Hole? at the Old Course at St Andrews.

Playing Tips

1
Par 5, Length 564m

The opening hole eases golfers into the round. It plays slightly downhill to a green well-protected by bunkers right. Those who play boldly will bring the severe fall-off slope on the right into play. Play smart and this hole is not especially difficult.

2
Par 4, Length 423m

Playing into a beautiful valley with towering vegetated slopes, this medium-length hole doglegs around a creek to a green site heavily bunkered on its left. Aggressive tee shots to the right will leave a short approach.

3
Par 5, Length 516m

This par 5 plays from elevated tees to a wide landing area. From here, here hole tightens with a stream right that flows downhill and just short of the green site. It can be reached in two but the long second shot is played from a difficult downhill lie. Like the first hole, two smartly played shots will leave an easy approach to the multi-tiered green that?s bunkered on the right. There is ample room to the left of the green. A quintessential risk/reward hole.

4
Par 4, Length 351m

Although visually-intimidating from the tee, this short par 4 provides a generous landing area. Bunkers on the left of the landing area and green will hold swallow errant shots. As with many of the holes, strategy is key on this shot marker?s course.

5
Par 3, Length 163m

Playing toward a verdant mountainside, this medium length par 3 is slightly uphill to a green defended by beautiful bunkering. The front and middle of the green is fairly easy to reach but back left pin positions will require very accurate and bold play.

6
Par 5, Length 561m

This long, uphill par 5 plays into a vast canyon surrounded by think vegetation and highlighted by a stream ending in a beautiful series of waterfalls at the tees. There?s plenty of room to play from tee to green but the constant ascending slope is quite demanding. A beautiful hole.

7
Par 3, Length 186m

This picturesque par 3 plays downhill to a well-bunkered green set atop a cliff leaving one of the most stunning views in all golf. From the green site you can overlook almost two complete courses, surrounded by towering slopes of the National Forest. This hole is set along a rock face on the left that will become a feature in itself. One of the showcase holes at Mission Hills.

8
Par 3, Length 232m

Following the shorter seventh, this long par 3 plays slightly downhill to a green that angles right to left with plenty of bunkering left. A large bunker short of the green appears closer than it really is and hides a large bail-out area right. Use slightly less club as the ball will tend to feed into the green.

9
Par 4, Length 335m

Dramatically downhill, this short par 4 provides a great risk/reward opportunity for long hitters. The landing area is ample for fairway wood or long iron tee shots, but things tighten up past the main landing zone. Those who do hit the driver can feed the ball near or on to the green. Tee it high and let it fly!

10
Par 5, Length 508m

From elevated tees with tremendous views, this hole plays slightly downhill to a wide first landing area then slightly back up to a heavily-bunkered green. The smart play is to keep your second shot left for the best approach. Aggressive play too long and left, however, will bring trouble into play as the elevated fairway sharply falls away.

11
Par 4, Length 406m

Dramatically downhill, this medium-length par 4 is most demanding for the second shot as an open channel cuts across the front of the green. Tee shots played toward the fairway bunkers will provide the best angle in. long tee shots will leave only a short pitch to the green.

12
Par 3, Length 177m

This relatively gentle hole is a welcomed breather. There?s plenty of area left and shots will tend to feed onto the green from that side. A series of bunkers on the right provide some visual drama but should be out of play. Keep it left-of-center and catch the slope that feeds onto the putting surface.

13
Par 5, Length 523m

This short par 5 is another gambler?s delight. With a serve slope to the right, tee shots must be played left. From the fairway, the hole drops down some 25 meters to the green. Aggressive tee shots will come to rest at a level landing area about 200 yards from the green site leaving a dramatic long iron shot downhill to the green. Conservative second shots will catch the slope and end up very near the green. A bail-out area is located left of the green but go over and you?re in jail. Attack or play defensively, it is your choice!

14
Par 5, Length 546m

This uphill par 5 offers is protected by bunkers on the left at the turn. The second landing area can be attacked by any variety of clubs leaving a third to a slightly elevated green with sand short, left and right. Nestled into a canyon, this tree-lined hole should prove quite challenging.

15
Par 3, Length 347m

Played from elevated tees with an enormous view past the hole, this one-shotter calls for a long accurate shot that, if desired, can be played by feeding the ball in short of the green. A series of cross-bunkers frame the hole giving it a wide-open feel.

16
Par 4, Length 347m

Short but dangerous, this hole offers two options from the tee: play safely to the main landing area, or flirt with the bunkers as the hole tightens up. The downhill tee shot will tempt players to catch a significant slope and run up toward the green for a short pitch.

17
Par 3, Length 181m

This medium-length hole offers a variety of pin placements on an elevated green. Playing over a low wetland area, the hole is set against a beautiful backdrop of dense trees.

18
Par 4, Length 442m

The longest par 4 on the course is saved for last. Slightly uphill and doglegging left, the tee shot can be played left to cut the corner but bunkers and ground cover come into play. The second shot plays uphill to a green abutting thick jungle and sloping from front to back. Front pins can be reached by running the ball in but a cross-bunker well short must be negotiated. A classic par-4 finishing hole.

Apart from the meticulously manicured landscape and aesthetic ground covers, the Leadbetter Course demands accurate approach shots to large but undulating greens.

Additionally large sand bunkers litter the fairways and protect the greens as well while elevated tee boxes are strategically placed to raise the degree of difficulty. Otherwise, the course is eminently playable by golfers of all levels.

The signature hole is the Par-3 183-yard 16th hole which tees-off over a ravine to an island green sandwiched between creeks from the ravine. Apart from being a testing ground, this scenic hole also offers great photo opportunity

Playing Tips

1
Par 4, Length 448m

The course starts out strong with a long par 4 that doglegs slightly right to a well-bunkered green. Back left pin placements will prove especially demanding.

2
Par 5, Length 556m

From elevated tees, this stunning hole plays downhill to a landing area with a series of bunkers left. More room is available in the landing area than what appears from the tee. The hole then plays back uphill to a green protected left and back right by impressive bunkering. The green features two tiers but is not overly demanding.

3
Par 3, Length 197m

With a dramatic backdrop of the dense forest, this medium-length hole is open in front but the left edge of the green falls off severely. Play to the right and the ball will feed to the center.

4
Par 4, Length 386m

Short but treacherous, this hole demands a very accurate second shot from those who lay back from the large bunker that cuts off the front of the green. There is no room for error if the approach is long. Second shots can be worked left-to-right and fed down a slope to the green.

5
Par 4, Length 338m

Playing back uphill, this medium-length hole will play slightly longer. Doglegging right-to-left, the best tee shot is long and right for a second shot to a fairly large green surface. A small bunker in front of the green could pose problems.

6
Par 5, Length 578m

This downhill tee shot begs to be hit hard. Well past the landing area is a stream that bisects the fairway, runs left of the second landing area and then cuts back in front of the green. The second landing area is large but the player should be thinking of position for his third shot. The green is bunkered left and right, and a bunker above the stream looks near the green but is quite short. Reachable in two for only the longest players, this hole will play fairly easy for the player who doesn't push his limits.

7
Par 4, Length 386m

Plays slightly uphill to a plateaued fairway and onto a beautiful green backed by an immense mountain. The fairway sweeps into the green from the left but a large bunker guards the right side. Having perhaps the most dramatic backdrop on the course, this hole should be quite memorable.

8
Par 4, Length 475m

The eighth will play slightly shorter than its yardage as it drops significantly downhill from the tee. The green is well-bunkered, especially on the left, so play safely to the right -- avoiding the single bunker short -- and use the slope to feed it left.

9
Par 4, Length 363m

This short but wild hole plays substantially downhill from elevated tees to a tight landing area. Driver can be hit but it must be well-placed or carry a large bunker right, leaving an easy pitch to the green. The hole plays uphill from the landing area to a multi-tiered green set into a slope.

10
Par 3, Length 130m

Set atop a cliff edge, this short par 3 features a series of sculpted bunkers on the left to keep balls from falling into the canyon below. The green is undulating and offers a difficult back-right pin that can only be reached by carrying a steep-faced trap.

11
Par 4, Length 409m

This hole is quite intimidating from the tee but actually offers ample room right. A series of caped bunkers along the left edge of the fairway require caution. The sand immediately in front of the green is much further from the green than it appears.

12
Par 4, Length 479m

Two words: long and uphill! This is undoubtedly the most difficult par 4 on the course. Blast driver as far as you can -- there's plenty of room and no fairway bunkers. The second should play to the left as the right side of the green is well bunkered. Take your score here and move on!

13
Par 5, Length 605m

From elevated tees, the drive plays to a wide-open landing area before turning quickly to the right. Second shots should flirt with the bunkers left to leave the best angle into the green. This hole should play as a true three-shot par 5.

14
Par 3, Length 195m

Slightly uphill, this hole will be kind to a ball played right-to-left as the front right is quite open and will accept a low, running tee shot. Smart players will favor the front right and attempt to work a draw into the pin.

15
Par 4, Length 420m

Playing downhill, the best tee shot may not be with a driver as the first order of business is to find the plateaued fairway. The hole turns quickly right and drops sharply to a green backed by forest and lake. A well-placed tee shot will leave only a short iron into the green.

16
Par 3, Length 183m

This one-shotter plays across a deep, water-filled ravine to a very small green surrounded on three sides by water and sand. Swirling winds can wreak havoc with club selection.

17
Par 5, Length 541m

An uphill par 5 that offers plenty of room in the landing area but tightens slightly as players gte closer to the green. Bunkering at the front of the green is well short so don't be fooled. Take an extra club to combat the slope.

18
Par 4, Length 425m

Somewhat tight off the tee, this hole will demand a solid, well-placed drive up the left side to attack with the second. The green is well-bunkered, especially on the right, and demands a crisply-struck shot. Not overly long but still quite tough.

Mission Hills Dongguan - Norman Course

The 7,214-yard Norman Course reflects the perfect combination of golf course style and nature. The front 9 holes meander through mountain ridges and the hillside, while the back 9 holes are set in a valley. The narrow fairways, surrounded by long grass and dense forest vegetation contribute to the course's difficulty index of over 150, which is one of the highest in Asia.

Greg Norman built a reputation designing challenging golf courses wrought in the traditional stylings of his native Australian Sandbelt.

His 7,228 yard offering at Mission Hills follows suit, as narrow fairways surrounded by long, native grasses and dense forest vegetation contribute to the layout's reputation as one of the most difficult courses in Asia.  The front nine meanders through dramatic mountain ridges and hillsides, while the back nine lays gingerly in one of the property's many lush valleys.

The course is a majestic vista of the original flora and fauna, and streams of clear water crossing paths with the paspallum-covered fairways giving rise to a spectacular backdrop for a championship course. Finger-shaped sand pits with deep bowl-bottoms and thick grassy vertical lips characterise the course.

Following the reservoir and curving right on the Par-5 580-yard Signature Hole 15, a plethora of Olazabal's 'bowl-bottoms' greet an unsuspecting visitor. Strategically, a conservative play, meaning accurate placements and landing with the 3rd, will yield good scores here; otherwise attack only, meaning attempting the green in two taking full advantage of the steep slope on the right to bounce the ball back to the fairway, if you are willing to risk paying the price!

Playing Tips

1
Par 5, Length 532m

Begin your journey from the top of the world, overlooking a large swath of golf holes. The downhill tee shot plays to a very wide landing area, so tee it high and let it fly! At the center of the fairway just past the main landing area is a bunker that must be avoided. Things tighten up a bit as the hole proceeds but essentially an easy opener.

2
Par 3, Length 220m

Again, downhill from elevated tees, this moderately-long par 3 is open in front, but flanked by bunkers left, right and behind. The green is fairly large and simple but trouble lurks for any shots that fly too deep as there's a sharp fall-off. The smart play is to toward the front right portion of the green.

3
Par 4, Length 346m

Although slightly uphill, the hole does not require driver off the tee, as a stream could swallow exceptionally long tee shots. The best play is a fairway wood up the right side to leave the best angle in. The undulating green sits at an angle, bunkered heavily on the left but somewhat open on the right. This is one of the easier holes on the course.

4
Par 5, Length 582m

A slightly dangerous drive to a plateaud landing area with bunkers right. The second shot is downhill through a tight line of trees. The green is slightly raised and protected by a series of bunkers. Don't worry about being too strong with your approach, as the area over the green is benign.

5
Par 4, Length 403m

Not long, but a wide stream poses trouble up the left side. Play the tee ball toward the target bunkers on the right. The stream bisects the hole well short of the green, and the uphill second is very demanding with a deep bunker guarding the front of the green. Those wary of the bunker can play left and still save par.

6
Par 3, Length 234m

This long, slightly uphill and well-bunkered par 3 is a test. A visually-intimidating cross bunker sits well short of the green. There is an enormous bailout area short and right, but chipping from there is quite difficult as the right edge of the green will funnel balls toward the center of the green. Many good players will walk away with four here.

7
Par 5, Length 544m

Perhaps the most fun tee shot on the course. The fairway is set at a strong left-to-right angle with bunkers up the right side. Bold tee shots that can thread the needle will receive a strong kick forward. Less aggressive drives and second shots will result in an easy pitch to the green, especially from the left.

8
Par 3, Length 145m

Hugging the base of a mountain, it can be played to two different greens ? one slightly uphill and flanked by six bunkers, the other protected by a meandering stream and two sand traps. Playing to either green presents a challenge, despite the relative lack of length.

9
Par 4, Length 417m

The tee shot plays to a wide landing area that quickly drops down to a narrower fairway. The green rises above the fairway and is guarded on the right and left by sand.

10
Par 4, Length 384m

The hole plays into a valley surrounded by towering, thickly-foresyed mountains. Slightly uphill, the hole doglegs right to a green protected by numerous bunkers. The long, narrow, multi-tiered putting surface calls for an accurate short iron. This holes relative alck of length belies its true difficulty.

11
Par 4, Length 374m

Short and downhill but dangerous off the tee with vegetation left and a long, and a sweeping series of bunkers and water right. Hit the driver if you dare but be sure to work the ball left-to-right off the tee. The hole then plays slightly uphill to a heavily-bunkered, peanut-shaped green.

12
Par 5, Length 521m

Off the tee, work it left-to-right off the left fairway bunker to find the short grass and have an opportunity to hit it in two. A stream bisects the hole about 120 yards short of the green. Play right and leave a more delicate third shot over greenside bunkers, or left and bring the water into play, but be rewarded with a much easier pitch to the green.

13
Par 4, Length 448m

Downhill and right-to-left with a fairway that tightens up at its turn. Aim at the target bunkers right and the ball will receive a strong kick to the center of the fairway. The green site is unique with a short-mowed "valley of sin" at the front of the green behind bunkers. Balls will potentially suck back off the green if not struck firmly enough.

14
Par 3, Length 177m

Medium in length and fairly forgiving, this hole can be played conservatively to the left center or attacked on the right when the pin is set on the back. A bit of a breather hole in preparation for the final four.

15
Par 5, Length 593m

Long and mean, this par 5 starts from an elevated tee. A series of cross-bunkers sit in the second landing area and can be carried by only the longest hitters. The third plays severely uphill to a green protected in the front by deep bunkers. The green is much larger than it appears, features some significant undulation and is protected by a bunker at the rear.

16
Par 4, Length 400m

Short and bisected by a stream, this hole doesn't require driver off the tee. The landing area falls off quickly, providing added roll but potentially kicking shots into the creek. The green features some strong contours including a large swale in the front.

17
Par 3, Length 201m

Watch your ball soar against the majestic cliffs backing this long par 3. Bunkers encircle the green making proper club selection vital.

18
Par 4, Length 479m

This finishing hole is the most difficult par 4 on the course. Bending right-to-left and quickly rising uphill to a plateaued green, the best drive is down the right, allowing the fairway to funnel the ball back to the center. Bunkers right of the two-tiered green protect pins in the middle and right side of the surface. A strong closer.

Playing Tips

1
Par 5, Length 547m

A tough opening hole as the fairway slopes toward out-of-bounds running down the right. An approach hit left will open up the green.

2
Par 4, Length 465m

Proper positioning is vital off the tee on this long dogleg right. A fairway bunker and out-of-bounds guard the right, and a gaping bunker will punish any short or pulled approach into the green.

3
Par 4, Length 325m

A monster bunker on the right is to be avoided, so aim for the bunker beyond the tree in the middle of the fairway. An accurate drive placed next to the bunker will give a good birdie opportunity. The green can also be reached in one with a drive down the right that's smoked.

4
Par 5, Length 535m

This par 5 gives the option of laying up short of the fairway bunkers or playing over the left pot bunker. The lake and thre bunkers guard the right side of the green.

5
Par 4, Length 375m

A short par 4 with a lake down the right and cutting in front of the green. A large hump runs through the middle of the putting surface.

6
Par 3, Length 188m

The lake will catch any shot short or hooked left. The shallow green has many undulations and slopes toward the water.

7
Par 4, Length 385m

A beautiful hole playing uphill to a two-tiered green surrounded by mature pines. Longer hitters may elect to carry the fairway bunker for a better angle on the second shot.

8
Par 3, Length 175m

A sweet par three playing from an elevated tee to a kidney-shaped green 25 meters below.

9
Par 4, Length 470m

Three bunkers guard the fairway while the forest right is out-of-bounds on this long, uphill par 4.

10
Par 5, Length 582m

This superb par 5 is the longest hole on the course and requires a lot of thought. The second shot plays downhill to a green protected by a lake and three bunkers.

11
Par 4, Length 393m

The perfect drive is over the fairway bunkers and just right of the old gun tower. The green features bunkers front and back.

12
Par 4, Length 466m

Avoid the fairway bunkers left on this downhill par 4. The boomerang-shaped green fronted by sand.

13
Par 3, Length 252m

A windswept one-shotter that's receptive to shots bounced in from the right. A huge bunker on the left protects an exceptionally small green for a par 3 of this length

14
Par 4, Length 452m

A great, dogleg left driving hole. Deep fairway bunkers catch shots that play safe and the rippled fairway may kick your drive off line. Cavernous bunkers guard the right side of the green.

15
Par 4, Length 343m

A deceptive par four that can be reached in one, but beware the water short. The fiercely-undulating green makes three-putting for par a possibility.

16
Par 3, Length 163m

A downhill, island green par 3. Take care not too balloon your short iron into the prevailing wind and come up short.

17
Par 4, Length 472m

With the mountains to the left and water to the right, this par four is another beautiful hole. The green features dramatic undulations and bunkering.

18
Par 5, Length 514m

A very tough finishing hole. The lake is in play from tee to green, while bunkers will catch shorts that play too far to the left. The green is almost surrounded by water. A demanding finale to one of Asia's finest courses.
