You’ll want to frame your scorecard, no matter what you shoot. Golf on Maui is that memorable. This itinerary has you staying at a wonderful 5 star property (Sheraton Maui) and playing 5 very memorable golf courses (several of which are ranked at or near the top of the “world’s best” lists) designed by noted course architects and golfing luminaries such as Arnold Palmer and Ben Crenshaw.

You’ll see why it’s difficult to imagine a more dramatic setting for these 18-hole masterpieces, with fairways abutting ancient lava flows, tees surrounded by palm groves, and greens arched by rainbows formed in the ocean mist. Views at Wailea and Kapalua are intoxicating. The hardest thing you will need to work out is what date you want to come back.

The Bay Course winds through palm trees and hibiscus plants down to the sea.

The signature hole number 5 is right next to the ocean, offering scenic views of the island of Molokai in the distance. The hole is a par 3, so your tee shot must carry 90 meters over the Pacific Ocean.

Wailea Resort’s original layout, beautiful and gracious, hails from an era when character defined the golf course. In the case of this renowned Arthur Jack Snyder design, the Blue is aptly nicknamed the “Grand Lady of Wailea.”

Wailea’s Blue is a true Hawaiian classic, and akin to the perfect hostess. Her picturesque fairways guide guests on a relaxing jaunt through the heart of resort, offering inviting views of Maui’s neighboring islands and its 10,023-foot dormant volcano, Mt. Haleakala.

Along the way, the Wailea Blue serves up ample portions of great island golf: lush fairways with fragrant landscaping, greens with a bit of bite, lovely lakes, and classic coral sand bunkers. Snyder clearly took advantage of the Blue’s superior location on the foothills of Haleakala to create a series of fun and challenging fairways. On the par 5 #4, for instance, golfers are presented with a blind drive over a dramatic uphill slope that obscures the green and most of the fairway. But there’s a reward at the top of the hill: magnificent views of Ma`alaea Bay and the West Maui Mountains.

The Wailea Blue features its own clubhouse and pro shop, and is a perennial favorite among returning Wailea golfers who enjoy the Grand Lady’s time-honored design and friendly island hospitality.

Called a thinking players course, the Gold offers a true test of ones golf skills. But the most difficult hazards on it are the distracting island views. In one round, you can enjoy spectacular vistas of the ocean, Molokini islet, ancient lava rock walls, coconut trees and sparkling white bunkers.

The home course of The Champions Skins Game, the 6434 Wailea Gold is the most challenging of Wailea’s trio, with a rugged and masterful design that takes advantage of the terrain’s natural undulations. But four to six tee boxes on every hole also make it a suitable track for virtually every player.

Created by architect Robert Trent Jones II, the Gold was honored by both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as one of the country’s ten best new resort courses when it opened in 1994. It has also been recognized by the Maui Historical Society for its preservation of prehistoric lava rock walls during construction, and hailed as one of the world’s best designed courses by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler in the magazine’s first golf resorts poll.
